Students build on their foundational skills by combining shapes and colors in more complex ways. They are introduced to the idea of creating artwork with intention and begin discussing the artwork of others.

Students apply more advanced techniques and begin using art vocabulary to critique their own and others' artwork. They explore how artists communicate ideas and will begin to make connections between art and other subjects.

Students create artwork with greater detail and purpose, demonstrating control of materials and tools. They analyze how culture, history, and personal experiences influence art and begin using art to tell their own stories.

Students experiment with a range of techniques and media to communicate meaning and mood in their artwork. They develop critical thinking skills through art analysis and explore how visual art connects to social, historical, and contemporary issues.
